My new book BETWEEN CHARNWOOD AND THE CHEVIN; growing up in Derbyshire, just after the Second World War. A memoir, has just been published by Matador, ISBN 9781838591915 at £9.99. It’s a snapshot of the time between post-War austerity and the beginning of the Swinging Sixties, and is set in and around Derby, the suburb of slightly uptight Allestree where I grew up – to me,as a child, in the early 1950s it seemed like a cross between The Stepford Wives and Royston Vasey  –  though it has changed enormously by now  –  and no-holds-barred Belper, where I attended the Herbert Strutt Grammar School  between 1955 and 1961 and started to write while skyving from hockey lessons(a bloodbath in a mudbath) in an alcove in the school library.

It’s a bit of social history, some family history – who knew I had a silent movie actress for an ancestor and a world famous philosopher for an in-law? – and has a few supernatural happenings, some eccentric neighbours,  violent teachers and terrible school dinners along the way, as well as a lot of laughs…

I hope you’ll feel inclined to have a look…. buy a book – why not?
